Daily Deal Watch – Restaurant Diner Use, Attitudes and Intentions

Daily deal sites have experienced explosive growth in today's more cost-conscious world. Are these deals becoming the new norm for consumers? What does the restaurant industry need to understand about consumers' mindset? How can deals be used to drive new business?

To better understand consumer awareness and usage of daily deal sites such as Groupon and LivingSocial, Technomic surveyed more than 5,000 consumers, with detailed questions about their purchasing behaviors posed to 1,000 consumers who had bought a coupon from one of these sites in the past three months.

Among the questions addressed in this report:

  • To what extent are consumers aware of and subscribing to daily deal sites?
  • How popular are restaurant deals relative to deals for other businesses?
  • Are consumers more interested in deals for familiar restaurants or those they have not yet experienced?
  • What proportion of consumers return to restaurants without a daily deal? Do they talk about their deals on social networks?
  • How large a role does mobile technology play in real-time daily deals (e.g., Groupon Now)?
  • What are the most popular couponing sites and what are the characteristics of consumers who visit them?
