U.S. systemwide sales for the limited-service hamburger industry increased by 4.1% in 2008, to more than $64 billion, slowing somewhat from a previous rate of 4.6% posted in 2007. The increase in sales rate is influenced greatly by McDonald's performance (up 4.4%), given that McDonald's makes up nearly half of the segment's overall sales. In comparison, this segment outperformed that of total LSR industry's (up 3.2%) and total restaurant industry's (up 0.4%) growth.
The LSR hamburger industry's rate of expansion continues to be relatively flat, boosting its unit count by 0.7% in 2008 though on par with the total LSR industry's unit growth rate of 0.6%. In contrast, the total restaurant industry's units declined by -0.6% over 2007.
