Common Interest Research

Many chains in the traditional casual-dining segment have experienced soft same-
store sales amid heightened competition and pressures on consumers’ disposable
income.Interestingly, competitive threats have come from both above and below, including
“trading down” to quick-casual restaurants with lower check averages, and “trading up” to
upscale casual-dining alternatives, where the enhanced experience delivers a different type
of “value.”

To help casual dining operators gain the critical consumer insights needed to help revitalize
the segment, Technomic recently completed a comprehensive consumer-based study,
Casual Dining Outlook: A Consumer Assessment and Best Practices Analysis. It provides
a clear assessment of what casual-dining operators are facing and what needs to be
done to improve their business.

Using both quantitative and qualitative consumer research, plus onsite assessments,
this study provides:

Consumer perspectives: Are they trading up, down, or out of casual dining, and why?
What can operators do to revitalize the segment?
Lessons learned from best-in-class casual dining operators.
